Vladimir Dubossarsky

Vladimir Dubossarsky

(b. 1964)

Vladimir Dubossarsky grew up in the family of the artist Efim Davydovich Dubossarsky, which shaped his own direction from the start. He studied at the Moscow Art School in Memory of 1905 from 1980 to 1984 and then at the Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute, and is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts. He began to exhibit during the perestroika years.

From 1994 to 2014 he worked with Aleksandr Vinogradov in the duo “Vinduby”. In their large-format canvases they fused the language of socialist realism, pop art and kitsch into an unusual, paradoxical resonance; the work is marked by inventiveness of subject and composition and by an unbridled irony. Together they took part in the Venice Biennale several times, as well as in the biennales of São Paulo, Valencia and Moscow.

Since 2002 Dubossarsky has been the initiator and artistic director of the “Art-Klyazma” festival. In September 2018 he staged a performance at the Udmurt Republican Museum of Fine Arts in Izhevsk: as part of the “Izhevsk.Da” festival he painted Arkady Plastov's “News from Korea” in front of the audience.

Vladimir Dubossarsky's works are held in museums around the world, among them the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the contemporary art collection of the Tsaritsyno State Museum-Reserve in Moscow, the State Russian Museum and the Novy Museum in Saint Petersburg, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Avignon, the Duke University Museum of Art in Durham, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, as well as in many private collections.

He lives and works in Moscow, and remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary Russian art.
