Miggs Burroughs
/Born 1946/
Miggs Burroughs is a celebrated American artist and graphic designer who has lived and worked in Westport, Connecticut his entire life. His creative fingerprints are found throughout his hometown and beyond, from public installations to national icons.
At just 26 years old, Burroughs became the youngest artist ever commissioned to design a U.S. Commemorative Postage Stamp. Shortly afterward, he was invited to create several covers for TIME Magazine — including the iconic cover for President Richard Nixon’s resignation, which now resides in the Smithsonian Institution.
Miggs has designed hundreds of award-winning logos, websites, and print materials for both global companies and local nonprofits. His clients have included Save the Children, the American Red Cross, Baskin-Robbins, and numerous community organizations such as the Westport Library, YMCA, Westport Country Playhouse, and many others.
A graduate of the Drama Department at Carnegie Mellon University (then Carnegie Tech) in 1967, Burroughs began his artistic career selling Pop Art-style prints in galleries in Boston and New York. His career has continually evolved, and in recent years, he has gained acclaim for his innovative work in lenticular imagery — a unique art form that creates the illusion of movement or transformation. His lenticular installations can be found in public spaces such as the pedestrian tunnel on Main Street in Westport, the Westport Train Station, and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, New York.
His contributions to the local art scene are equally significant. Miggs is a founding member of the Artists Collective of Westport, and an active member of the Silvermine Arts Center and the Ridgefield Guild of Artists. He is also the first Artist-in-Residence at the Westport Library, a title that reflects his deep commitment to community engagement through art.
Burroughs has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Westport Rotary (twice), named one of the YMCA’s “Faces of Achievement,” and honored as Volunteer of the Year by both CLASP Homes and STAR, Inc.
In 2012, he published his first book, The What If Book of Questions, which was met with glowing reviews. Whether through teaching graphic design at Fairfield University and UCONN, or through his public art installations and educational outreach, Miggs Burroughs continues to inspire and connect communities through creativity and innovation.
