JAMES BAXTER
Strange Visions
James Baxter’s art is deeply rooted in mystery and a connection to the ancient world. Growing up on a farm in southwestern Georgia, near the great Mississippian-era Kolomoki Mounds, he often discovered artifacts that sparked his lifelong fascination with ancient civilizations, their art, religions, and symbols.
His works intertwine personal experience, Lenni-Lena’pe heritage, and encounters with the supernatural. Baxter describes having witnessed unexplained phenomena throughout his life, experiences that profoundly shaped his vision and continue to inspire his art. Through these visions and ancestral traditions, he explores the boundary between the physical and the spiritual.
Equally drawn to the beauty of the everyday, Baxter captures the ordinary through his digital lens — people, light, and simple moments — transforming them into contemplative works of art.
For Baxter, art arises from mood and intuition. He collects images and memories, waiting until one speaks to him — then follows its call into creation.
This exhibition hall presents twenty-five of James Baxter’s works — reflecting the ancient, the mystical, and the human in equal measure.
