Anastasia Kuznetsova-Ruf
Anastasia Kuznetsova-Ruf was born on 26 April 1983 in Moscow. She graduated from the Institute of Contemporary Art founded by Joseph Bakstein in 2003 and from the Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute in 2007, with honours. She held scholarships from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation in 2007–2008, 2015 and 2017, and is a member of the Moscow Union of Artists.
She works mainly in monochrome, in a technique of stippled painting with charcoal pencil and tempera. Her classical training is evident, yet her pieces go past academicism: what matters in them is the idea, the psychology of the figures and the metaphor. Her monochrome works have a velvet-like texture and open onto endless spaces of light. Her art is often described as conceptual realism.
Since 2019 Anastasia Kuznetsova-Ruf has been included in the all-Russian investment rating “Top 100 Recognised Artists of Russia” (InArt), in the list of the Best Contemporary Artists of Russia (ART-INDEX) and in the people’s art rating of popular contemporary artists “I LIKE IT 2019” (49 ART). In 2020 she was named in the FORBES list “The 20 Most Expensive Russian Contemporary Artists by Auction Sales”. She has received a letter of gratitude from the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, awards from the Union of Artists of Russia and the Ministry of Culture, and a medal of the Russian Academy of Arts. She was recognised at the IV International Portrait Competition PORTRÆT NU! — the J. C. Jacobsen Portrait Award — in 2013, the first Russian artist to be honoured there, and was awarded at the international competition ArchiGraphica.
She has taken part in exhibitions, auctions and art fairs around the world for more than twenty years. Anastasia Kuznetsova-Ruf’s works are held in eight state collections: the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Novosibirsk and Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museums, the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan), the Krasnoyarsk Museum of Contemporary Art “Ploshchad Mira”, the F. A. Kovalenko Krasnodar Regional Art Museum, the I. S. Shemanovsky Yamal-Nenets Museum and Exhibition Complex (Salekhard) and the National Museum in Beijing (China), as well as in numerous private collections in Russia and around the world.
“What interests me most is finding symbols of the eternal in our everyday life. I like to use minimal artistic means — I work almost exclusively with charcoal — to create new forms and spaces that heighten the perception of reality. As a result, an apparently simple monochrome technique produces a complex work with many layers, both of drawing and of meaning. That fits the creative aims I set myself: it matters a great deal to me that viewers find several meanings in my works, meanings they can relate to personally, even if those meanings differ from the ones I first imagined. For me, that is the wonder of art.”
Anastasia Kuznetsova-Ruf lives and works in Moscow.
