Artist about this artwork
This painting is one half of a diptych. The inspiration for the "Rat-catcher" comes from the medieval legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, a tale that evolved in various Western European fairy tales. In this legend, the musician, deceived by the town's mayor in Hamelin who refused payment for using magic to rid the city of rats, led away the town's children, who then vanished without a trace.
