The martyrs are those of the Resistance against the Nazi occupation. The cave is not really a cave: it is a recess, perhaps a medieval cellar or a prison, in the northern part of Amiens, near the citadel.
The two vertical stems, which can be read as trees, break the monotony of the horizontal fields of color and give depth of field. The subject is not glamorous, but it can make us think about our role, about commitment, about the search for justice, and so on.
